Protest the World Economic Forum in New York City

ATTENTION RESISTERS!

From January 31 - February 4, 2002, New York City will host the World Economic Forum (WEF) -- 1,000 top business leaders who will come together to shape their global agenda. Here in New York we have formed a greeting committee to welcome them to our fine city. . .

Join people from around the world in New York City
January 31 - February 4, 2002
as we protest the World Economic Forum

Behind the closed doors of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, delegates will make decisions that affect the lives of people around the world. The W.E.F. and similar institutions work to weaken environmental protections and worker rights, support repressive regimes, widen the gap between rich and poor and - in the wake of September 11th - upholds attacks on immigrants and dissent in the US and acts of war in Afghanistan and elsewhere.

But war and repression aren't the only responses to the horrors of 9-11. From January 31 to February 4, community activists, youth, environmentalists, union members, religious leaders, and everyday people will come to New York to talk about a future far different than the one being planned for us -- and we'll have our voices heard!

We call on everyone to join us in a weekend of resistance! There will be space for all kinds of resisters - alternative social forums with speakers from around the world, concerts, street theater, direct action, marches and more!

This is a great opportunity - just a subway ride from Ground Zero - to show the world that we want no part of the repressive agenda being pushed on us. This political climate is one in which conservative 'values' are forced on everyone, racist and homophobic attacks are increasing, and anti-immigrant policies and massive curtailment of civil liberties are put into place - all with lasting consequences. But we're ready to fight for a different future- one embodied by thousands who will protest the World Economic Forum.

It's also a change to bring the case of Mumia Abu-Jamal to a world stage at it's most crucial moment, when the government's case has just begun to crack. In this climate in which dissent - and dissenters like Mumia - are being attacked from the highest offices in the land, a victory in Mumia's case would be a major victory for the people.

Refuse & Resist! will co-sponsor several events throughout the week. Housing will be available - so call or email soon! See the list below (list of events still in formation) for more information about the World Economic Forum and the actions planned from January 31 - February 4, 2002.
